What it is good at

  • Granular permission nodes and group inheritance
  • Web editor for safely changing permission data
  • Multiple storage backends and support for server/proxy platforms

What types of servers should consider it?

  • Almost any public server that needs ranks or staff permissions
  • Networks that need consistent permission data
  • Servers replacing built-in OP-based permission management

Pricing and distribution

The plugin is distributed as a free option. Check the official page for the current download source and license.

What to check before using it

LuckPerms manages group inheritance and permission nodes for the platform on which it runs. On proxy networks, a proxy installation does not replace LuckPerms on backend servers where Bukkit plugins perform their own permission checks.

Common questions

What does LuckPerms do?

Permissions, groups, ranks and access control for Minecraft servers.

Is LuckPerms a plugin or a mod?

LuckPerms is listed here because it is used as a server plugin in its supported plugin environment. Some projects also publish builds for other platforms; use the official download page to choose the correct platform build.

Do players need to install it?

Most server plugins run server-side and do not require players to install the same JAR. Features that rely on resource packs, Bedrock bridges or optional client integrations can still change what the player must download or accept.

How do I install it?

Install the platform-specific release (Paper plugin, Velocity proxy plugin or supported mod-loader build) in that platform’s folder. Fully restart. On a Bukkit backend, run /lp info and use /lp editor to make and save a small test change. Use the command given by the editor to apply it.

How do I know the plugin loaded?

Check startup for successful storage initialization and run /lp info. Test a single harmless permission using a non-OP account to confirm that the backend, not just the proxy, is applying it.

What if it does not load?

If edits do not affect players, check for competing permission managers, missing storage/database connectivity, wrong platform builds and whether the permission is checked on the proxy or backend. Keep a backup of LuckPerms data before storage migration.

For general plugin installation, read How to Install Plugins on a Minecraft Server. To understand the plugin lifecycle and how plugins differ from mods, read How Minecraft Server Plugins Work. If the plugin refuses to load, use Plugin Failed to Load.
