What is a Minecraft server plugin?

A server plugin is a JAR loaded by a compatible plugin platform such as Paper or another Bukkit-style implementation. Plugins can add commands, permissions, shops, claims, minigames, custom content and integrations while running on the server.

Plugins vs mods

Plugins and mods are not interchangeable. Paper/Bukkit plugins use a server plugin API; Fabric, Forge and NeoForge mods use mod-loader APIs and can modify a much wider range of game behavior. A file made for one platform usually will not load on another.

How do you install a plugin?

  1. Confirm your server software can load plugins.
  2. Open the plugin's official website and confirm your Minecraft/server-software version is supported.
  3. Download the correct JAR and any required dependencies.
  4. Put the plugin JAR in the server's plugins/ folder.
  5. Fully restart the server. Avoid relying on /reload for plugin installation or updates.

How do you know a plugin is running?

Watch the startup console and logs/latest.log. On Bukkit/Paper-style servers, /plugins is also a quick check: enabled plugins normally appear as loaded. A plugin can still have feature-specific errors after enabling, so its startup messages remain important.

What if a plugin does not load?

Do not guess by deleting random files. Find the first relevant error in logs/latest.log. Common causes include a missing dependency, unsupported API/server version, wrong Java version, wrong platform build, duplicate JAR, invalid plugin metadata or a startup exception.

Are plugins safe?

Plugins run on your server machine with significant access to server files and Java APIs. Download them from trusted official sources, keep backups, review permissions/dependencies, and do not run random JARs from reupload sites.

Where can I find mainstream choices?

Use the MSH Plugin Directory for a brief overview of mainstream options by category. Before installing any plugin, use the official website to confirm that it supports your server software and Minecraft version.

Understand where a plugin actually runs
  1. A Bukkit/Paper plugin loads into a supported backend, while a Velocity plugin loads on the proxy. A JAR compiled for one platform does not automatically run on the other.
  2. Check declared dependencies versus optional integrations; an economy provider and Vault bridge might be needed for only one feature of a larger plugin.
  3. When a command is missing, read the earliest plugin enable error before troubleshooting permissions; a disabled plugin cannot register its intended commands.
