Direct answer
Pre-generate only the area you plan to support. A larger radius can require much more disk space and time. For Chunky, a simple workflow is:
chunky radius 5000
chunky startRun it before launch or during a low-impact maintenance window, monitor server load, and keep a world border aligned with your intended playable area.
Why pre-generation helps
When players enter unexplored terrain, the server must generate chunks while also processing normal gameplay. Pre-generation performs that work in advance. It does not make already-generated chunks free to load, but it removes the generation step for the prepared area.
Plan the radius
Do not pre-generate “as far as possible.” Disk usage and generation time grow rapidly as the covered area expands. Chunky's documentation recommends starting with a smaller radius when unsure and expanding later.
Chunky platform support
Chunky supports common server implementations including Paper/Spigot, Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Sponge, and Folia builds. Use the build that matches your platform and follow the project's current installation instructions.
Operational tips
- Back up the world before large generation/trim operations.
- Temporarily pause map renderers if they multiply the workload.
- Watch CPU, MSPT, disk, and free space while generating.
- Do not run multiple heavy pregeneration jobs simply because the tool allows it; your hardware may become saturated.
