Direct answer

Change the current Java server difficulty with /difficulty normal (or peaceful, easy, hard). You do not need to create a new world.

Recommended procedure

  1. Choose peaceful, easy, normal, or hard.
  2. As an operator run /difficulty hard, substituting your intended difficulty.
  3. Run /difficulty to read the current setting.
  4. For a persistent startup default, review difficulty=hard in server.properties and follow your host’s restart procedure. The active command can be applied while online.

Why this matters

Difficulty changes hostile mob behavior and damage rules but does not repair missing mobs, unload a world, or fix a plugin overriding gameplay settings. Peaceful can remove hostile mobs, so check consequences before switching to it.

How to verify the result

Confirm the /difficulty output and test the intended mechanics. If a multiworld plugin manages difficulty separately, inspect its per-world configuration.

Version and compatibility notes

This guide covers Minecraft Java Edition. Check the exact server software and world-management plugins before assuming one change applies to every world.
