Direct answer
A Modrinth .mrpack describes a modpack; use a trusted server installer or the project’s server export, not a plain JAR rename.
Recommended procedure
- Choose the exact Modrinth project version and record loader, Minecraft version and dependencies from its metadata.
- Follow the pack’s official server install method (or a supported installer that resolves the
.mrpack) into a fresh directory; review downloaded files and run scripts. - Restore only compatible world and server configs after first startup, preserving a complete backup of the original installation.
Why this matters
Modded servers are strict about Minecraft version, loader version, mod version, and dependencies. A correct client pack does not automatically mean every client-side mod belongs on the server.
Important limitation: A client-side performance/UI mod is not automatically valid in a dedicated server installation. Avoid mixing files from separate pack releases.
How to verify the result
- Join with a matching Modrinth client instance and verify mods, item IDs and dimension travel before opening the server to players.
Version and compatibility notes
- When a setting, command, or file name differs from this guide, stop and check the documentation for your exact Minecraft/server-software version instead of forcing an old example.
