Direct answer

Velocity is a Java Edition proxy, not a replacement for a world-hosting backend. It forwards players to backend servers such as Paper that run the actual worlds.

Recommended procedure

  1. Download Velocity from the official PaperMC source and start the proxy once to create its config.
  2. Register the backend server addresses in velocity.toml and configure a documented player-information forwarding mode.
  3. For modern forwarding, use a shared forwarding secret and matching Paper backend configuration.
  4. Keep backends on private networking or firewall-restricted addresses; expose only the proxy port to players.

Why this matters

Proxy forwarding is an identity/security boundary. Successful proxy connection does not prove backend identity forwarding is correct, and the forwarding secret does not replace firewall isolation.

How to verify the result

Join through the proxy and confirm UUID, skin and permissions are correct. From outside, verify direct backend ports are not publicly reachable.

Version and compatibility notes

A Velocity plugin belongs in the proxy’s plugins folder; Bukkit/Paper plugins belong on backends. Never assume one JAR works on both environments.
