Direct answer
Purpur is a Paper-based server fork. It usually follows the Paper start-JAR workflow, but its extra gameplay settings should be tested separately.
Recommended procedure
- Choose your target Minecraft version and check that a Purpur build actually exists for it.
- Check the Java requirement for the underlying Paper/Minecraft line: Paper 26.1+ requires Java 25, while 1.20–1.21.11 uses Java 21 per Paper docs.
- Download the JAR from the official Purpur site and place it in a dedicated empty server folder.
What to change
java -Xms2G -Xmx2G -jar purpur.jar --nogui # match the actual downloaded filename- Create a launch command pointing at the downloaded JAR filename, then start the server.
- Review the EULA and set eula=true only if you agree to the terms. Restart and monitor startup output.
- Customize
server.propertiesfirst; review generatedpurpur.ymlonly after confirming the default server works.
How to verify the result
Join locally, run /version to confirm the software and Minecraft release, and read the logs for plugin/API incompatibility.
Version and compatibility notes
Do not install Purpur as a Fabric/Forge mod. Paper plugins may require version-specific testing; Purpur is not the same as Folia. Back up before changing an existing server software JAR.
