Direct answer

Paper is a high-performance Minecraft Java server with a Bukkit-compatible plugin ecosystem. Download the exact Paper build and use the supported Java release for that Minecraft version.

Recommended procedure

  1. Download a Paper server JAR from the official PaperMC download site.
  2. In a clean directory, launch it with a compatible Java runtime and an explicit JAR filename, for example java -Xms1G -Xmx2G -jar paper.jar nogui if sufficient RAM is available.
  3. Read the EULA and set eula=true only if you agree, then start again.
  4. Configure server.properties and add plugins one at a time after creating a known-good backup.

Why this matters

Paper configuration and plugin APIs can differ from Vanilla/Fabric/Forge. Migrating modded saves or downgrading a world is not covered by copying a Paper JAR over the existing one.

How to verify the result

Confirm the Paper version in startup logs, join once, stop cleanly and check that a small test build persists.

Version and compatibility notes

Check PaperMC’s current Java requirements before choosing java; do not blindly copy old JVM flags or overwrite the only world backup.
