Direct answer

Leaf is Paper-derived, but its extra async and tuning options are branch-specific. A clean installation should be tested with default settings before importing old configuration fragments.

Recommended procedure

  1. Choose an official Leaf stable build for the Minecraft version you need. Experimental builds are not recommended for production.
  2. Confirm the Java requirement shown beside that exact build and check your runtime with java -version.
  3. Create a fresh directory, place the downloaded JAR there and start it once to generate configs.

What to change

java -version
java -Xms2G -Xmx4G -jar leaf.jar --nogui
  1. Use a startup script with the exact JAR filename and a reasonable heap below your total available RAM.
  2. Accept EULA after reading it, restart, test plugins and a small world, then back up the resulting clean config files.

How to verify the result

Check console output, player connections, new world generation and plugin compatibility before importing an existing world.

Version and compatibility notes

The public Leaf global configuration reference documents 1.21.1; do not paste those defaults into a 26.x server. The official download page labels channels and Java requirements by build.
