Direct answer
Install Fabric Loader for the exact Minecraft Java release and build a dedicated server profile. Fabric uses mods/ for its mods; Bukkit/Paper plugins do not become compatible automatically.
Recommended procedure
- Download the Fabric installer from the official project and choose its server installation path/version.
- Use the generated launch command or loader JAR that the installer provides, with the Java version required by the selected Minecraft release.
- Review and accept the Minecraft EULA, then run the server once to generate configuration and folders.
- Place matching server mods in
mods/, following individual client/server and dependency requirements.
Why this matters
Fabric Loader, Fabric API and a modpack are different components. Fabric API is required by some mods but not every Fabric server; loader version and mod Minecraft version must also agree.
How to verify the result
Start with zero optional mods, confirm the server loads and a client can join, then add mod groups and inspect logs/latest.log for the first loader error.
Version and compatibility notes
Use an isolated copy before converting a production Paper world or changing loaders. Back up world, configs and player data before migration.
