Direct answer

Use gamemode creative PlayerName from a Java server console, without the leading slash. In-game, an authorized administrator uses /gamemode creative PlayerName.

Recommended procedure

  1. Choose the target player and intended mode (survival, creative, adventure or spectator).
  2. Run the explicit-target command from the appropriate backend console.
  3. Check the return message and verify the player actually changed modes.
  4. If a plugin overrides modes, inspect its permissions or per-world settings.

Why this matters

Server consoles do not have a player context for selector defaults. Supplying the target explicitly avoids relying on the command sender’s in-game identity or position.

How to verify the result

Ask the named target to open their inventory or test a harmless ability and confirm the mode. Do not use broad selectors when you intend to change one player.

Version and compatibility notes

Use the backend Java Edition console; a Velocity proxy console may not provide the vanilla gamemode command.
