Direct answer

Fabric API is a collection of common modding APIs; it is not the Fabric Loader itself. Install Fabric API only when the server modpack or a mod dependency requires it.

Recommended procedure

  1. Install a Fabric server loader release compatible with your Minecraft version.
  2. Check the modpack manifest or mod error for a required Fabric API version.
  3. Place the correct Fabric API JAR in mods/ beside required server mods, then restart.
  4. For clients, follow each mod’s client/server dependency requirements rather than assuming every server mod must be client-installed.

Why this matters

A missing API dependency can stop a mod during loader initialization. Installing an arbitrary newer Fabric API built for another Minecraft release does not necessarily satisfy the dependency.

How to verify the result

Read the first requires fabric-api or loader dependency message in the startup log, then verify the next startup registers all required mods.

Version and compatibility notes

Fabric API is not needed by every Fabric mod. Avoid mixing Forge/NeoForge builds into the Fabric mods/ folder.
