Direct answer
A DNS AAAA record maps a hostname to an IPv6 address. It is useful only when the server has a reachable IPv6 listener and firewall route.
Recommended procedure
- Confirm the server host has a usable globally routed IPv6 address, not a link-local
fe80::address. - Add an
AAAArecord for a hostname such asplay.example.compointing to that address. - Allow the appropriate Minecraft Java TCP port in the IPv6 firewall and ensure the game process listens on the correct interface.
- Keep a working IPv4 A record when serving players without reliable IPv6.
Why this matters
IPv6 generally does not use the same IPv4 port-forwarding mechanism, but inbound packets can still be blocked by router or host firewalls. DNS record existence does not prove the service is reachable.
How to verify the result
Use dig AAAA play.example.com to confirm DNS and attempt a connection from an IPv6-capable external network.
Version and compatibility notes
Never publish a temporary IPv6 address that may rotate unexpectedly without DDNS or stable address management.
