Direct answer
Vanilla spawn protection is a limited radius around world spawn, not a general land-claim system. If blocks can still be broken there, check who is an operator, the spawn-protection value and whether another plugin controls that area.
What it means
The spawn-protection value in server.properties applies to normal spawn protection under the vanilla permission model. Operators can bypass it, and many plugin servers use independent WorldGuard or claim rules.
Practical example: Example: a new non-OP player cannot break blocks near the actual world spawn while an OP can. That is expected vanilla behavior. If the opposite occurs, check whether spawn-protection is disabled, the tested location is not world spawn or a protection plugin is replacing the expected policy.
If you are a player
- Test the same block placement with a normal non-OP account rather than an administrator.
- Confirm you are near the actual world spawn in the intended world.
- If only one region behaves unexpectedly, report its coordinates and whether it has a protection plugin.
If you run the server
- Check
spawn-protectionin server.properties and restart after changing it. - Check the true spawn location with a safe console-approved method; plugins may teleport players elsewhere while world spawn stays unchanged.
- Inspect operator status and region plugins before blaming the vanilla setting.
- Test in the default world with a clean non-OP account and compare with an area farther from spawn.
- Use a claim/protection plugin for per-region permission rules; vanilla spawn protection is not a flexible permissions engine.
