Direct answer
A closed Minecraft Java port usually means no reachable process is listening on the tested public TCP endpoint, or a firewall/router/provider is blocking it. Check the exact listening port before editing DNS.
What it means
Java Edition normally uses TCP port 25565, but panel allocations, proxies and custom server-port values can differ. A local-only binding can make the port unreachable externally.
Practical example: Example: the server may run on TCP 25566 while a public port checker probes TCP 25565, making the wrong endpoint appear closed. First read server-port or the proxy listener, then match the external port in the router and firewall. A failed TCP test cannot determine whether Geyser’s separate UDP port is open.
If you are a player
- Verify the server IP, hostname and configured Java port with the owner.
- Run port tests from outside the host network, not only on the same Wi-Fi.
If you run the server
- Verify the server starts without an
Address already in useorFailed to binderror. - Check that the expected TCP port is listening using
ss -ltnon Linux ornetstat -anoon Windows. - Check the local firewall and cloud/provider firewall rule for inbound TCP.
- For home hosting, forward the router’s external TCP port to the right LAN host and internal port.
- If router WAN and public IP differ, check CGNAT/double NAT; retest from a separate network.
