Direct answer
Paper 26.3 has an accepted bug report for BlockDispenseEvent firing twice from a single dispenser action in certain cases. If your plugin logs two events but the dispenser only performs one in-game action, investigate this Paper issue before assuming your plugin listener is registered twice. The upstream issue is PaperMC/Paper #14415 (reported October 20, 2026, accepted October 21). The issue was still open when this article was reviewed on October 26.
What the bug looks like
- One dispenser activation creates two
BlockDispenseEventcallbacks in a listener or diagnostic log. - Only one item or TNT action may occur in the world: two callbacks do not necessarily mean two items were dispensed.
- Plugins that charge money, log actions, apply limits, or trigger rewards from that event may react twice unless their behavior is carefully tested.
This is a Paper API event behavior issue. It is not evidence that every dispenser duplicates items, and the report does not establish that the same bug affects every Paper fork or every item type.
Why it happens on 26.3
The accepted report traces the extra callback to the newer Sulfur Cube dispenser interaction. For item types handled by SulfurCubeBlockDispenseItemBehavior, the first Paper event is invoked while testing whether a Sulfur Cube can consume the item. If that special handling does not apply, vanilla behavior falls back to the ordinary dispenser action, which can invoke the event a second time. The report also describes a TNT example. This describes the reported code path, not a verified workaround for all item types.
How to verify without risking the live server
- Record your exact Paper build, plugin versions, and Minecraft version. The report used Paper
26.3-209; later builds must be checked individually. - In a disposable staging world, place a dispenser facing an empty block and put a single representative item in it. Use one controlled redstone pulse.
- With an event logger or a developer-provided diagnostic build, count
BlockDispenseEventcallbacks for that single activation. Compare this with the actual number of dispensed items or actions. - Repeat with the plugin disabled (if safe) to distinguish a Paper-side event issue from duplicate listener registration or a plugin-specific effect.
- Test the precise item, conditions, and build used by your production server; do not assume results from one item apply to all.
What should server owners do?
- Check for an upstream fix: review the Paper issue and official build notes before updating; the issue being accepted is not proof it has been fixed in every later build.
- Do not globally cancel or ignore every second event: two legitimate dispenser actions can happen close together. A naive time-based filter can break real gameplay or protections.
- Test affected plugins: ask plugin maintainers whether their event handlers are idempotent or provide a confirmed mitigation for your Paper build. Avoid changing payment, protection, or reward logic in production without staging tests.
- Avoid blind downgrades: rolling back a world saved by a newer Minecraft version may corrupt or lose data. Keep a complete pre-upgrade backup and use a supported restore plan.
Status and compatibility
As of October 26, 2026, the primary source labels this an accepted bug for Minecraft 26.3. No universal server configuration key, plugin command, or guaranteed fix has been established in that report. Re-check the upstream issue and release notes for the build you actually run.
