Direct answer

A connection that was already established stopped receiving expected traffic. Distinguish this from a timeout before any Minecraft login or a login-stage timeout.

Identify the failing layer

Repeatedly increasing a network timeout can hide a server stall; it does not repair packet loss or a hung main thread.

First checks and evidence

  • Record the exact disconnect time and whether the player had entered the world.
  • Ask whether several players disconnected together; a single route and a server-wide stall require different investigations.

Admin diagnosis and repair

  1. Correlate proxy/backend logs with ping or packet-loss measurements at that time.
  2. If tick time froze, profile the server; if tick time remained healthy, inspect network, VPN, Wi-Fi and host saturation.

Verify the fix: Reproduce the drop during a controlled session and check whether it disappears on a second network without changing server settings.
