Direct answer
Connection reset is a generic network disconnect, not a single Minecraft-specific root cause. The fastest path is isolation: determine whether it affects one player or everyone, whether it follows the same device on another network, and what the server log records at the exact disconnect time.
“Connection refused” usually means no service accepted the initial connection at that endpoint. “Connection reset” means a connection was forcibly closed/reset after or during connection handling, so logs and the exact stage matter.
If only one player is affected
- Try the same account/device on another network, such as a phone hotspot.
- Try another device on the original network if available.
- Use a clean client matching the server version.
- Check local firewall, VPN, security software, and unstable Wi-Fi only after you know the problem follows that client/network.
If many players disconnect together
Look at server and proxy logs for the same timestamp. Check host networking, proxy health, firewall/rate-limit changes, resource exhaustion, and server tick stalls. A server that freezes long enough can cause clients to disconnect even though the message appears network-related.
Do not guess from the client message alone
The client often only knows that the TCP connection disappeared. The server-side log, proxy log, and whether the attempt appears at all are more useful than reinstalling Java or changing DNS at random.
Collect a reproducible test
Record the time, affected player, client version, whether a hotspot works, and the relevant log lines. This turns an otherwise vague error into a debuggable server, client, or network problem.
- Compare the same player using home broadband and a phone hotspot; then compare a second player on the same server. This identifies a device-specific path versus a server-wide issue.
- Record the client message together with the Velocity/backend log line at the same second. A proxy closure and a server restart can look identical to the player.
- Do not publish full IP addresses or session tokens when sharing logs for diagnosis.
