Direct answer
Separate chunk generation, disk I/O, network delivery, and tick lag when terrain loads slowly for players.
What it means
Slow terrain appearance can come from generating new chunks, reading existing chunks from storage, server tick overload, or delivering chunk data to the client; those need different fixes.
Use this when chunks load slowly for players. If the profiler proves new terrain generation is the expensive task, the “lag while exploring” guide is narrower; if generation crashes, use the crash guide.
If you are a player
- Check whether the symptom is low FPS on your own computer, high ping/rubber-banding, or the whole server slowing down; these are different problems.
- Note the exact time, world/area, and action that triggers the lag (exploring, a farm running, saving, many players online, and so on).
- Ask another player whether they see the same delay. Give the owner a reproducible location/action instead of only saying “the server is laggy.”
If you run the server
- Profile during exploration/chunk loading and separate new chunk generation from loading existing chunks from disk.
- Check CPU single-thread headroom and storage latency while the spike occurs; both can limit chunk work.
- If generation is the cause, consider pregenerating the intended world border/area during low traffic rather than letting many players generate terrain simultaneously.
- Check world-generation datapacks/mods separately if only one dimension or newly generated terrain is abnormally slow.
Important notes
- More allocated RAM does not make a slow main-thread workload faster. Change heap size only when memory/GC evidence supports it.
- Test returning to previously explored terrain, then test traveling to brand-new terrain at the same speed. Only the second necessarily generates new chunks.
- Watch disk latency and Java profiler samples while players teleport or fly. A slow storage read suggests a different fix from expensive new-world generation.
- If pre-generation helps exploration but not returns to known terrain, inspect region-file I/O and plugins that load distant chunks.
