Direct answer

Check whether chat is invisible, rejected with an error, or causing a disconnect. Those are different problems; record the exact message before changing server settings.

What it means

If only one player cannot see messages, client chat visibility or account restrictions may be involved. If everyone can type but messages disappear, inspect chat-formatting, moderation and proxy plugins. Chat signatures exist in Java Edition 1.19 and later, but disabling chat authentication without understanding the cause is not a safe general fix.

If you are a player

  1. Open the Minecraft client chat settings. Ensure chat is not set to a hidden or commands-only mode when you expect to see normal messages.
  2. Type an ordinary message, then try a simple permitted command. Note whether the server reports a permission denial, a signature error, or disconnects you.
  3. Test the same account on a separate compatible server. If only one server fails, send its administrator the exact error and your client version; avoid sharing private account tokens.

If you run the server

  1. Reproduce the failure using an operator and an ordinary player. Distinguish incoming chat from outgoing display by checking console/log messages at the exact timestamp.
  2. Inspect logs/latest.log for signed-chat, plugin listener, moderation or proxy errors. Change one chat-related plugin at a time on a test copy; do not remove moderation from a public server without an alternative.
  3. If a proxy is involved, confirm compatible proxy, backend and chat plugin versions. Keep Minecraft account authentication and secure chat expectations intact rather than globally relaxing security as a guess.
How to verify the fix

Confirm two ordinary accounts can send and receive messages without a console exception, while moderation rules still work. Test after a full restart; an operator-only test is insufficient.
