Direct answer
Move expensive compression or copying away from peak play and verify storage throughput and backup method.
What it means
Backup copying, snapshots, or compression can compete with Minecraft for disk throughput, CPU, and I/O cache, creating lag even though the backup itself is not part of the tick logic.
If you are a player
- Check whether the symptom is low FPS on your own computer, high ping/rubber-banding, or the whole server slowing down; these are different problems.
- Note the exact time, world/area, and action that triggers the lag (exploring, a farm running, saving, many players online, and so on).
- Ask another player whether they see the same delay. Give the owner a reproducible location/action instead of only saying “the server is laggy.”
If you run the server
- Measure disk space and I/O latency while the save/backup spike occurs instead of judging only by CPU usage.
- Check whether backups, compression, snapshots, antivirus, or other host jobs overlap with world saves.
- Keep backups, but move expensive copying/compression away from peak play and avoid writing backups into the live world directory.
- Confirm clean saves on a test/backup copy before changing save intervals or force-killing Java.
Important notes
- More allocated RAM does not make a slow main-thread workload faster. Change heap size only when memory/GC evidence supports it.
Confirm the backup is the trigger
- Compare the exact backup start/end timestamps with spark profiler or MSPT spike times; do not attribute every evening spike to backups.
- Check whether compression or cloud upload is consuming CPU, disk write bandwidth or both while chunks are being saved.
- Run one backup off-peak and compare average and worst-case tick time. If it is still disruptive, stage the archive after taking a consistent snapshot instead of directly compressing an active world.
