Direct answer

Folia does not have one globally representative MSPT value. Different loaded regions tick independently, so a reading taken only from Folia’s global region may miss a slow region containing players. Check the affected players’ regions, not just a global task or averaged figure.

Why a global-region metric can mislead

In the October 23, 2026 ViewDistanceTweaks 2.14.1 release, the maintainer explains that the plugin formerly checked performance on Folia’s global region, which normally has no players. Its MSPT thresholds therefore did not respond to player-region overload as intended. Version 2.14.1 queries each online player’s region every five seconds and uses the slowest result for distance adjustment. This behaviour is specific to that plugin version; it is not a blanket definition of Folia metrics.

Step-by-step diagnosis

  1. Identify which world, coordinates and players are affected. Compare a crowded base with a quieter location.
  2. Check metrics from the affected region or use a Folia-aware tool that schedules reads on the correct region thread.
  3. If using ViewDistanceTweaks, confirm it is version 2.14.1 or newer and review /vdt doctor to see where the value came from.
  4. Compare region performance with player distribution, entities, chunks and plugin tasks. Do not draw conclusions from a single short sample.
  5. Test one mitigation at a time, such as reducing simulation load or spreading high-density activity, then measure again.

A note for plugin developers

Folia region state is accessed on the owning region thread. Do not query or mutate another region’s world state from an arbitrary asynchronous task. Consult Folia scheduling documentation before integrating profilers or optimizers.

Paper vs Folia

On ordinary Paper or Purpur, conventional server-tick statistics may be meaningful. On Folia, different regions can independently maintain their tick schedules. Never copy a Paper-only MSPT monitoring implementation to Folia without checking its threading and reporting semantics.
